Baryon, although not widely distributed and very well known, is an excellent example of a top down shooter that was developed by ACRO Studio, published by Game Factory and released to the gaming world in the middle nineties. It was created especially for play on the personal computer in the DOS operating system. Baryon features a science fiction theme, with the user playing the part of a pilot on an aggressive space craft. It is a brilliant little shareware release.

Baryon features a science fiction theme, with the user playing the part of a pilot on an aggressive space craft. It is a brilliant little shareware release.
Baryon features some great arcade shoot ‘em up action. As vertical shooters go, it does not add anything novel to the genre, but still offers an exciting and action packed game. The user can look forward to wave after wave of enemy as he blasts
his way along the scroll. The scenery is lousy with aliens and the user has to clear the area of its obvious infestation by collecting power-ups to make his ship stronger and faster. He must also keep a very happy trigger finger, shooting just about non stop.
One of the reasons the level of action is so high and fast paced in Baryon is the fact that there is a wide assortment of enemies, and a never ending supply of them, at that. Not only will the player have to use lightning fast reflexes to shoot down the enemy, but the same reflexes have to be utilized in order to avoid ships that squeak through the barrage of flame and also enemy fire. To improve the play, the user will be able to reveal some cool power-ups when he destroys certain enemies and objects. These can boost shields, empower weapons, add lives and so forth. The game play, especially the types of power-ups, are not at all unlike the more mainstream game, Raiden. The goal on each explosion and flak filled level is to battle the way to the end and take out the big boss that is laying in wait for you.
Other than the solid game play, Baryon features surprising graphic quality for a shareware game of this age, and a more than adequate soundtrack to help the player to focus while blasting away. Both items add some quality stars to this space shooter. Overall, Baryon may look like a standard space shooter…which it is…but it plays better than most and is actually a great deal of fun, despite its outward, mundane appearance. A gamer cannot go wrong with this download, with its nonstop action and flaming fast pace.
